[Fellow Memorial Lecture] Interdisciplinary Sociological and Engineering Research on Human-Robot Interaction

Abstract(in English) This talk presents an overview of our interdisciplinary sociological and engineering research on human-robot interaction. We use a three-step approach to developing human-friendly robots. First, we investigate how humans behave by using ethnomethodology in sociology. Second, based on the findings we develop a robot. Third, we examine how humans and the developed robot interact again through ethnomethodology, and then evaluate the system in order to refine it. We show three robots developed through this approach: a robotic wheelchair moving alongside a caregiver, a museum guide robot using appropriate nonverbal behaviors to hold the visitors’ interest, and a care robot being able to smoothly communicate with humans through nonverbal behaviors.
