Abstract(in English) The capacity of optical submarine cable systems has been drastically increased by introducing various innovative technologies. Although the continuous growth of the communication traffic is foreseen, it was found that there is a capacity limit with the conventional technologies. Space division multiplexing with multi-core fiber has attracted a lot of attention as a promising approach to overcome such limit. This paper reviews the project “OCEANS” which is funded by Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and is conducting R&D on high-capacity ultra-long-haul multi-core fiber transmission technologies.
