Understanding Support of Intention in Figures by Discovering Attribute of Figures

Abstract(in English) Figures are often used as a means of conveying messages. Figure drawers use attributes of figure objects to express the intention of message. For instance, by change the color of the most important object from other objects so as to convey “the object is important.” On the other hand, the reader understands the message of the drawers from attributes of figure objects in the figure. However, not all readers can notice of the differences of attributes and read the message correctly. In order to read the intention, it is necessary to notice the difference of the attributes and consider the intention indicated by these differences. Since this processes is usually performed unconsciously, to make them aware of this process promotes them of acquiring the method for understanding intentions in figures. Therefore, this research proposes a system that can perform these steps step by step. The proposed system consists of a step to extract the attributes and relationships of the objects in the figure, and a step to give meaning to the extracted features. It also has a function for supporting each steps appropriately. In this presentation, we will discuss the outline of the proposed system and the effectiveness of this system through evaluation experiments.
