Abstract(in English) | Cloud Native Network Functions (CNFs) are essential building blocks of network slicing. While they can be typically provided as containers on commodity servers for maximum manageability, the efficiency of packet forwarding is drastically reduced compared to dedicated hardware devices. On the other hand, white-box switches (WBS) equipped with a programmable ASIC have been seen in real network services. Although WBSes can achieve comparable performance to the traditional-style devices, they would not be used in network slicing due to the inability of service management in a cloud native way, such as agile deployment and multiplexing of network functions. We propose an enhancement of CNFs such that they can flexibly cooperate with a WBS to achieve the high-performance as well as the manageability. Specifically, the WBS linked with commodity servers has a collection of utility network functions ($¥mu$VNFs), and it dynamically undertakes a part of the CNF’s packet processing (e.g. table matching and header modification) as Inbound/Outbound Offloading. In this paper, we study the effect of Outbound Offloading and show even the simplest header modification can be accelerated by our approach. |
