Applicability of variable apparture technique for measuring mode field diameter of multi-core fibers

Abstract(in English) Mode field diameter (MFD) is an important parameter for estimating transmission characteristics of optical fibers. A variable aperture (VA) technique is well known as a measurement technique of the MFD. However, the applicability of the VA technique to the fiber in which the core to be measured is not always located in the center of the optical fiber such as multi-core fibers (MCFs) has not been clarified. Moreover, the relation between the location of the core to be measured and the MFD obtained with the VA technique is not sufficiently clarified. In this study, we clarify the relation and the applicability of the existing measurement apparatus to the MFD measurement of MCFs.
