Abstract(in English) | Studies have investigated crossmodal correspondence between instrumental sounds and colors. Here we investigated whether musical instrument experience modulates such crossmodal correspondence. We classified participants into two groups of 40 university students based on whether they had over five years of experience playing any musical instrument. They were presented with 70 musical sounds varying in the instrument (12), fundamental frequency (2 or 3), and length (2), and were asked to choose a color that best matched the sound. Results showed that the spectral centroid of sounds was positively correlated with brightness and negatively correlated with saturation, irrespective of musical experience. No difference was observed between groups. In contrast, as for hue, classical multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis showed that participants with musical experience tended to choose similar hues depending on whether the sound was produced by string or brass instruments. |
