Recognizing detailed smile intensity changes for QOL estimation

Abstract(in English) This paper introduces a novel method for recognizing smile toward the use of QOL (Quality Of Life) estimation. Facial expressions in daily life are often subtle and ambiguous, for which conventional facial recognition methods have difficulties in recognition. In this research, we use the method of comparing a pair of face images for recognizing facial expression changes, instead of evaluating the degree of smiling from a single face image. The Siamese network structure that is one typical structure of DNN is used for comparing two input images that are close in time. We applied this method to face images that are in between smiling and neutral, face images with various face orientations, and face images during conversations.
