Basic study of sound design for acoustic cursor on a video game for visually impaired

Abstract(in English) In the action games for visually impaired, it is necessary for players to recognize game objects by sound. In the previous works, we proposed a DTMF prompt method based on maze branches by 3 kinds of sine waves. It has characteristics that easily recognize the position about game objects by only sound. But it has problems with listening to DTMF sound for a long time would cause players get tired from too much stimulation. In this paper, we propose a new prompt method by introducing a metaphor of sonar. Using the loudness, pitch and range difference between two ears to intensify the recognition of player cursor.
