[Invited Talk] Deblocking filter control of Versatile Video Coding

Abstract(in English) H.266|MPEG-I VVC(Versatile Video Coding), the latest standard jointly developed by ITU-T SG16 Q.6 and ISO/IEC JCT 1/SC29/WG 11, was finalized in July 2020. VVC employs hybrid coding scheme by combining block-based prediction, transform and quantization. In such video coding scheme, these block boundaries may produce blocking artifacts and therefore need to undergo deblocking. The deblocking design in VVC is based on HEVC deblocking and extended such that deblocking filter strength can be correctly controlled in consideration of several newly adopted coding tools and more flexible block partitioning. The use of larger blocks and transforms in VVC compared to HEVC make it necessary to also increase the deblocking length, so that Long Tap Deblocking Filter (LTDF) is introduced to vary the deblocking length up to 7 samples according to the size of the blocks. VVC also introduced Luma Adaptive Deblocking Filter (LADF) to control filter strength based on the average luma level near the block boundaries. This paper highlights some new key features of the VVC deblocking filter design and propose an encoding-side parameter determination technique for LADF based on the luma level distribution of the target video.
