Acceleration of Database Query Processing Using FPGA

Abstract(in English) A bottleneck of Big data analysis is a time to transfer large amount of data to the main memory from the storage. The data transfer time occupies quite a percentage of the turnaround time due to an unbalanced rate between data transfer and computation. In order to accelerate computational time by reducing data, a mechanism installing hardware such as FPGA is expected to reduce the volume of data prior to loading to the main memory. Our research group utilizes in-datapath computing, which is a on-the-fly computation for stream data from the storage and network input to the main memory of a host machine. This paper reports an FPGA-based acceleration of aggregation query processing using the in-datapath Computing. We developed a dedicated query processing hardware on an FPGA. In addition, we confirmed that the computational speed of a On-Line Analytical Processing benchmark Query 3 is accelerated about 10 times compared to Impala, which is a distributed query engine.
