Photograph observation of 12 parallel discharge arcs generated in the atmosphere by a reliable trigger gap switch

Abstract(in English) This trigger gap switch has a switching circuit that combines multiple main electrodes and induced electric field generating coils. This circuit is electromagnetically coupled to another trigger discharge circuit in the atmosphere. When the trigger circuit is discharged, the magnetic flux intersects the switching circuit and an induced electric field is generated. The resulting voltage is generated between each main electrode of the gap switch, and 12-discharge arcs occur. The discharge current flowing from the charged capacitor bank through this switch flows so as to cancel the inductance of the switching circuit. The coils of the switching circuit are wound for 4 turns and are electromagnetically coupled to the trigger discharge circuit placed just outside. The switching circuit and the trigger discharge circuit are selected so that all main electrodes are discharged even when there is no capacitor charging voltage between each main electrode. The entire 12-arcs photo (still image) is taken with an exposure time of approximately 1 second.
