Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | To remedy the lack of human resources in software development in companies, we can use crowdsourcing and inner source to assign the tasks to software developers. These methods are employed on the premise that developers can work remotely. Hence, it is difficult to take communication in person (synchronous communication); instead, developers take communication via the internet such as email (asynchronous communication). However, asynchronous communication may cause some problems because of the delay in communication. In this report, we investigate communication in open source projects to find time spans (discussion spans) that are permissible for developers in asynchronous communication. We choose open source projects as they are the most popular software development that mainly uses asynchronous communication. Our results show that (1) discussion spans vary with the development phases, and (2) the case where discussion spans are relatively long may not be applicable to short span developments while the case where discussion spans are relatively short is within one day. |
