Abstract(in English) | In order to examine neural mechanisms to form spatial frequency (SF) tunings of area 17 neurons, we recorded extracellular spike activities in response to sequences of rapidly presented sinusoidal gratings of various orientation and spatial frequencies under several contrast conditions, and analyzed contrast dependence of temporal changes of SF tunings and its suppressive components. At low contrast, temporal rate of SF tuning changes is relatively low and constant throughout response period. Under high contrast condition, on the other hand, whereas the change rate is similar to that of low contrast condition at early response period, it greatly increased thereafter. The suppression is stronger as contrast is higher. The relationship between excitation and suppression at high contrast condition indicates that the suppression predominantly contributes to the temporal changes of peak SF at middle to late response period. The results indicate that both feedforward and cortical recurrent mechanisms are involved in the generation of SF tunings of cortical neurons. The cortical mechanism stabilizing network activities based on stimulus contrast may also adjust feedforward-mediated SF tunings to optimize for low SF processing at low contras and high SF processing for high contrast conditions. |
