Attempt on the measurement of voluntary attention measurement by EEG

Abstract(in English) The process of initiation of attention selection (self-initiating attention) is an extremely important brain function related to human free will. However, there has been little research of the self-initiated attention because of its difficulty in handling. In this study, we conducted experiment to have participants select the location to attend by internal judgment or by free will any time during a trial. The location of attention can be estimated in the experiment by the response keys assigned to locations and the timing can be estimated by EEG signals with steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP). The results showed that the gamma spindle of spontaneous brainwave preceded the attention shift and that alpha band at the ipsilateral hemisphere increased after the attention shift. These results suggest that the gamma spindle is related to self-initiated attention.
