Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this study, the scented sanitary napkin with some particular fragrances was used as the model product to investigate the effect of packaging color on odor impressions. Furthermore, generational differences in this effect were also identified. Forty women took part in this experiment, 20 of them aged from 10 to 20 years old and the other 20 from 30 to 40 years old. In the experiment, participants answered questions about their preferences for the odors of four individual packaging ( colored with light peach, dark peach, light purple, and dark purple), emotional feelings, and the level of consistency between the color and the odor. Brain activities in the frontal lobe were measured with functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. The results showed that the interaction of color and odor affected the odor impressions of products, and there were differences between the two generations. For example, when the packing color was light pink or light purple, participants rated the odors with high scores. And the results of fNIRS also showed the significant main effect of smell and color on the brain activities of the frontal lobe.
