Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Myopia is the most common disorder in human eyes. Previous studies have reported that decrease in outdoor activity time was one of the factors of myopia. We performed a questionnaire survey on reduction in visual acuity of Japanese undergraduate students under remote learning due to the spread of COVID-19. Fifty percent of 112 undergraduate students reported feeling or having the test results of reduced visual acuity. A multi-regression analysis showed a significant tendency of feeling or having the test results of reduced visual acuity due to increased smartphone screen-viewing time. χ2 tests showed that more than three hours of smartphone screen-viewing time led to the feeling of reduced visual acuity. These results suggest that feeling of reduced visual acuity might be attributed to the extended smartphone screen-viewing time, not to the reduced outdoor time.
