Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Feedback control by the central nervous system is indispensable for stabilizing upright posture during quiet standing. We have been proposing a novel model of such postural control, which is referred to as the intermittent control model, as an alternative to the traditional continuous control model. In this study, we assimilated the intermittent control model into postural sway data obtained from young and elderly healthy individuals, as well as patients with Parkinson’s disease. Our result showed that postural sway patterns in healthy young people can be better explained by the intermittent control model, while those in patients with Parkinson’s disease by the traditional continuous control model. These results suggest that loss of the intermittency in the feedback control is one of the major causes of postural instability in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
