Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Individuals with neurological impairments such as spinal cord injury (SCI) often have impaired ability to control their upper-limbs. This has led to the development of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems that can help improve their motor function. BCI systems typically involve using a virtual reality environment to display motor imagery tasks with the aim of producing event related desynchronization (ERD) and synchroniza-tion (ERS) of the brain activity. In this study, we developed a virtual reality system that can display wrist and elbow flexion and extension up-per-limb movements. Specifically, in Unity (Unity Technologies, USA), we designed an object representing the left and right arms and the cam-era was adjusted such as to provide first person point of view of both hands. The wrist and elbow flexion and extension movements were ani-mated using the Blender (Blender Foundation, Nederland) software. Finally, the wrist and elbow angles were computed and streamed in re-al-time to a TCP/IP port. This system allows real-time joint angle feedback, while also having the capability for external control through Matlab via TCP/IP (The Mathworks, USA). Our preliminary testing showed that this system can elicit ERD / ERS of brain activity and changes in motor evoked potentials. Therefore, an interface between the brain the computer was developed which can affect brain dynamics.
