Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Visual search is an operation so as to find visually a target symbol in many alternatives. It is efficient in the sense that the search time does not proportionally increase even if the number of alternatives increases. In this technical report, the efficiency of visual search was analyzed from the perspective of complex networks. Eye movements were measured as a network composed of the points of gaze on the monitor screen blanketed with many symbols. As a result, a small-world phenomenon was observed in the network of the points of gaze, and, as such, it must be indicated that distances between any two points of gaze should become relatively short. Thus, the cognitive distance between symbols also must be short. Such the small-world phenomenon would be necessary to have the visual search efficient, because it shortens the search time before finding the target symbol. |
