High-efficiency light emissions by plasmonic nano-cavities and applications to quantum devices

Abstract(in English) Resonance with excitons in light-emitting materials and plasmon nano-cavities brings enhancements of the spontaneous emission rates and emission efficiencies. Surface plasmon (SP) resonance becomes effective only in the region within the penetration depth of the localized electric field near the metal interface. However, we found that even excitons generated in quantum well (QW) located deeper away from the metal surface seems to be well resonant for InGaN/GaN multiple QWs. This suggests that the exciton can transfer between QWs, which process cannot be explained by random walk model, but quantum walk-like mechanism. This property makes it possible to apply SP enhanced high-efficiency light emission to multiple QWs with more than 10 layers and also has potential applications as quantum devices operating at room temperature.
