Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Emergency Vehicles (EV) such as ambulances are required to arrive at the accident scene as soon as possible. In recent years, some VANET-based emergency vehicle approach warning systems, which use vehicle-to-vehicle communications and/or road-to-vehicle communications, have been proposed. In these systems, an EV notifies its neighboring vehicles of the current position. However, obstacles on the road such as vehicles are likely to prevent an EV's neighboring vehicles from receiving the EV’s approach warning packets. Therefore, a packet relay system is required to solve this problem. Although some studies evaluate the EV’s approach warning reception rate and the amount of traffic, few studies measure the EV arrival time. In this paper, we propose two types of environment-adaptive relay methods that select vehicles or roadside units as a relay node according to the vehicle density. We evaluate them by using a computer simulation and show their effectiveness from the viewpoints of the communication coverage rate, traffic volume, and EV arrival time.
