A Fundamental Evaluation of Dynamic-Duplex Cellular System on 5G NR Downlink in High SHF Band

Abstract(in English) IBFD (In-Band Full-Duplex) has been studied on its application to the beyond 5G (5th Generation) since IBFD enables a simultaneous operation of DL (downlink) and UL (uplink) communications at the same frequency and ideally doubles system capacity compared to the conventional HD (Half-Duplex). The DDC (Dynamic-Duplex Cellular) system has been proposed to expand system capacity of the cellular systems by applying IBFD without degrading existing communication quality, while previous studies have focused on conventional LTE (Long-Term Evolution) systems in the sub-6 GHz band, and no report has been presented for the 5G new radio (NR) operating in the high SHF (Super High Frequency) band. In this report, we propose a 5G NR-based DDC system that adds UL communication to existing DL subframe by considering the antenna directivity in the high SHF band. The proposed DDC system can suppress inter-cell interferences and improve the average UL user throughput by the appropriate user scheduling, antenna beam control, and transmission power control. The system-level simulation shows the effectiveness of the proposed DDC system to improve average UL user throughput by about 10% compared to the HD.
