Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this presentation, the relationship between food, eating behavior, and linguistic expression will be examined from three perspectives: verbalization of eating sensations, the naming of foods, and food memory descriptions. When eating, people use their five senses to perceive the state and characteristics of food. By consciously verbalizing sensations experienced during eating, we establish memories more easily and enhance our expressiveness. Food memories relate not only to the state of food itself; they evoke descriptions of the scenes and the feelings we experience while eating. Food that left a deep impression on us brings up feelings and memories just with one mention of the name. On the other hand, even with items you have never eaten, if you have the ability to appreciate the creator's intention and background simply from the naming and design, you can engage in conversation about food that transcends time and space. The naming of wagashi traditional Japanese confectionary is a good example.
