The Influence of L1 Semantic Categories on L2 Vocabulary Acquisition

Abstract(in English) About second language (L2) vocabulary learning process, Jiang (2000, 2004) proposed a three-stage L2 vocabulary acquisition model, however, in Jiang’s model, the relationship between L1 and L2 in terms of semantic category was not taken into consideration. The present study investigated whether or not and how the semantic category of learners’ L1 influences their L2 vocabulary learning. This study also explored the differences of the proficiency of learners. A writing test and a judgment test were implemented. As a result, the words which L1 has a broader semantic category than L2 is considered to conform to Jiang’s three-stage development model of vocabulary acquisition, while the words in opposite condition do not. Moreover, the words which L1 has a broader semantic category than L2 is considered to be more difficult to be acquired as negative evidence is required while the words in opposite condition seems able to be acquired more easily as just positive evidence is enough. The role of the relationship between L1 and L2 in terms of semantic category was discussed.
