Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The ruby element in Japanese websites is a barrier for screen readers. Screen readers read out Japanese ruby text after pronouncing kanji. This repetitive reading prevents most Japanese screen reader users from understanding sentences on websites. To improve Web accessibility for screen reader users, we have developed a "Screen Reader Mode." It is a function that modifies information on a web page so that screen readers read either kanji text or ruby text. In this paper, after briefly discussing existing accessibility problems of the ruby element, we describe how we developed the Screen Reader Mode to solve the problem.
