Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In recent years, there has been a growing interest in selective stimulation of small fibers in pain research. Intra-epidermal electric stimulation (IES) has been proposed for selective stimulation by injecting a weak current through a concentric bipolar needle electrode. Recently, we developed a computational model of a small myelinated fiber (Aδ fiber) by combining electromagnetic field analysis and nerve modelling with experiments for single pulse stimulation that permitted a better understanding of IES effects at neural level. However, no study has modelled the effects of multi-pulse stimulation in which the synapse take part. In this study, we extended the Aδ computational model to include a synaptic model that simulates the neural response of multiple nerves for pulse-train stimulation. The proposed computational model matched the pain threshold results for variation of the number of stimuli (threshold convergence after five pulses). Extension of the synaptic model is necessary to investigate other stimulation parameters effects, such as frequency variation.
