Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Optical fiber sensors have been extensively studied owing to their advantages such as long-range measurement, light weight, etc. As the state of polarization (SOP) in optical fibers is highly sensitive to various physical parameters including lateral pressure, bending, and magnetic field, various types of SOP-based sensors have been developed. To date, time-domain and frequency-domain configurations for measuring the SOP distribution along optical fibers have been reported, but the correlation-domain configuration (i.e., optical correlation-domain reflectometry (OCDR)), which has such unique advantages as random accessibility and real-time operation, has not been employed to measure SOPs so far. In this work, we newly develop a correlation-domain system for distributed measurement of the SOP of the backscattered light. Our method operates on the basis of the physical nature that the interference power of the reference and signal lights depends on the inner product of their Stokes vectors. We experimentally demonstrate the operation of this “polarization-sensitive OCDR (POCDR)” by measuring the SOP distribution of the light backscattered from a sensing fiber that is partially bent to induce linear birefringence.
