Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Manga (i.e., comics) includes a variety of different information in panels (depicted objects, word bubbles, onomatopoeias, etc.) and hence, when reading, readers are supposed to engage in high-order cognitive abilities such as integration of objects with words, causal inferences, and on-line construction of a contextual representation. Many studies have shown that individual differences in these abilities have an impact on reading behavior. Therefore, we could assume that individual variability could emerge in visual exploration when free reading manga. To test this assumption, we investigate the relationship between gaze behaviors of “manga” reading and personality traits of readers. We recorded fixation duration and fixation count on “manga”. Furthermore, we measured readers’ trait emotional empathy and the Big Five personality traits. Results showed that fixation duration and fixation count were consistent across time and have universality among different manga works. In addition, some fixation data are found to be associated with some of specific personality traits. These findings point to a possible use for gaze behaviors of “manga” reading as indices of personality traits of readers.
