Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has been known that the pupil of the human eye responds not only to changes in brightness, but also those in cognitive tasks such as mental arithmetic. A recent study reported that pupillary dilation reflects one’s ability to discriminate English sounds /l/ and /r/. The result suggests that pupillary responses may be used to evaluate leaner's listening comprehension. In the present study, we evaluated pupillary responses during second language (L2) vocabulary learning which is one of the requirements in L2 acquisition. We performed two kinds of comparisons on pupillary responses in total of 9 English learners: ① when silently reading new L2 words in pre-, during, and post-learning phases, ② successfully memorized words and unsuccessful ones after learning new L2 words. As the results, significantly different pupillary responses (dilatation) were observed in both comparisons. These results suggest that quantitative observation of pupillary responses may replace or be employed in parallel with traditional vocabulary tests to make L2 vocabulary learning more efficient.
