Remote Communication for Enabling Realistic Tele-Presence

Abstract(in English) In the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic, the use of remote control for various tasks is accelerating. Under these circumstances, Holoportation, which enables remote communication with a sense of presence by sending and receiving 3D-captured video data of a remote person, has been attracting attention in recent years. In order to realize reliable Holoportation under the constraint of communication quality fluctuation, it is necessary to devise ways to reduce the amount of large-scale data and ensure communication quality. In this study, we propose an optimal point cloud processing for the application side and the utilization of Local 5G system for the network side, to realize a stable remote communication technology for Holoportation. This paper envisions basic concept of remote communication system utilizing Local 5G, reports our preliminary evaluation of the prototype system and conducts a feasibility study of the future system.
