Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This research explores how the “background” setting, referring to the contents displayed on the screen other than the participant’s body, is used as a communication resource for co-creating “shared space” during online casual conversations, which participants technically don’t share their physical space. The analysis of several recorded conversations revealed that the “background” discloses information about the participant. Thus, it is argued that the “background” facilitates the creation of “shared space” by functioning as a topic of conversation. It can also be concluded that participants enhance their connections by assuring that they follow the same norms of online communication, and by pointing out its deviance when a participant flamed-out of the screen.
