Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Audio reproduction systems, such as 22.2 multi-channel system, generating sound source directions by synthesizing three dimensional sound intensity have been getting popular in recent years. With this situation, we are developing an audio coding system for 3D acoustic signals. Kato et al. investigated the spatial auditory masking effect that occurs between sound sources placed in three dimensional space. They found that the masking threshold is lowered as the maskee direction moved away from the masker direction. However, it was also found that when the maskee is located at symmetrical position of the masker with respect to the frontal plane of a listener, the masking threshold level is not lowered compared with those of other masker directions. In order to apply the phenomena to audio coding, we conducted listening experiments to confirm that the spatial auditory masking certainly occures when we perceive quantization noise.
