Simultaneous Measurement on Mode Field Diameter of Multiple Cores in Multi-core Fibers

Abstract(in English) Space-division multiplexing technologies with multi-core fibers (MCFs) have been promising. Mode field diameter (MFD) is an important parameter for connection losses of optical fibers. Thus, MFD have to be measured precisely in MCFs. However, conventional measurement methods are time-consuming for MCFs, because MCFs include multiple cores in a fiber and all of them have to be measured one by one. The cost of MCFs depends on the measurement time, therefore shorten the measurement time of MCFs is strongly required. In this paper, we propose a simultaneous measurement method on MFD of multiple cores in MCFs using a near-infrared camera with near field pattern (NFP) scan method. In this investigation, we achieved shortening of MFD measurement time per core to 0.48 times compare to conventional single-mode fibers, by simultaneous measurement of all cores in a 4-core fiber.
