Basic characteristics of Differential OFDM Employing Decision-Feedback Multiple Differential Detection with Channel Prediction

Abstract(in English) OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is discussed as effective system for frequency selectivity. However, if severe Doppler shift occurs, OFDM cannot send data due to its frequent pilot insertion. Also, differential detection is effective for time selectivity, however it cannot detect accurate phase difference in severe Doppler shift.This paper proposes differential OFDM employing DFMDD (decision-feedback multiple differential detection) with channel prediction which is effective for severe time selectivity and frequency selectivity.Differential OFDM does not need pilot signal for channel estimation, and DFMDD with channel prediction can reduce computational complexity, keeping good tracking capability for Doppler shift.Also, since the trackability and reception sensitivity of the proposed schemes are determined by the value of the maximum differential symbol number $N$ of observed received symbols of DFMDD, it is necessary to evaluate the optimum $N$.In this paper, the optimum $N$ of the proposed schemes is confirmed by computer simulation in the channels of underwater acoustic communications as doubly-selective environment.
