Influence of array configurations on communication performance of optical wireless MIMO systems

Abstract(in English) We propose a new 4×4 Optical wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO-OWC) system design featuring a linear optical array at both the transmitter and the receiver sides for high-speed data rate transmission. Hence, a comparative study is performed to assess the new system performance in contrast to the conventional one applying the square constellation for optical arrays. The bit error rate (BER) performance over a communication range up to 65 m is experimentally evaluated in terms of Frobenius norm and the condition number which are important metrics of the MIMO transmission channel matrix. The results show that the channel matrix shape, which the condition number expresses, dominates BER if Frobenius norm is smaller than 1. Furthermore, the proposed MIMO-OWC system employing linear optical arrays shows to be less susceptible to the calibration error rather than the conventional square constellation. As the result of the experiments, we demonstrate BER<10^−4 for 100Mbps in 65m communication range.
