Computation on Circularly Polarized Electromagnetic Wave Backscattering by A Tree Target using FDTD Method

Abstract(in English) Chiba University is developing Circularly Polarized Synthetic Aperture Radar (CP-SAR). Understanding electromagnetic wave backscattering is of great interest to radar researchers, especially the backscattering of circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. This research aims to study circularly polarized electromagnetic wave backscattering by a tree target in an anechoic chamber. This tool employed an orange tree model and simulates the propagation of the wave’s electromagnetic fields by applying the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD). The result shows that the backscatter intensity variation amongst the four circularly polarize modes is smaller than the variation amongst the four linearly polarization modes. In the future, we will employ this result to simulate the wave propagation of CP-SAR system, and scattering of circularly polarized electromagnetics from complex objects on the surface.
