Performance Analysis of vhost-user toward Efficient VM/Container-based Network Functions

Abstract(in English) Vhost-user enables fast inter-process communications in the user-space, and ring buffers (Virtqueues) on shared memory regions are the heart of the mechanism. Various network functions have been virtualized or containerized under the name of Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV); however, vhost-user that bridges network functions and the underlying virtual switch is a huge roadblock in terms of performance. Packet copy between the processes has been regarded as a major cause, but simple zero-copying pushes the performance up only 20% for short-packet traffic. Meanwhile, better throughput can gain without removing packet copy when CPU caches are effectively used. Understanding the performance characteristics of vhost-user is a key to eliminate the roadblock, but this is a challenging subject due to the complicated architecture/implementation. In this paper, we analyze performance characteristics of vhost-user to boost up the packet forwarding efficiency of softwarized network functions.
