Abstract(in English) Recently, indoor positioning systems (IPS) using wireless networks has been gained much attention for wide-range purposes. However, fluctuations of wireless signals may contribute a serious drawback in the accuracy. In a lot of practical applications of indoor positioning, the detection of the current room inside a building may be sufficient. Then, the signal strength in each room can be much different from the one in another room, such that the signal fluctuation can be neglected. In this paper, we investigate a fingerprint-based room detection method using the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless network. This standard consumes much smaller energy than IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi, which is suitable for long-time use with a small battery. Our method selects the room whose fingerprint composed of the average signal strength and the packet loss rate is closest to the measured one. Through experiments in two buildings in Okayama University, we confirm the feasibility of the proposal.
