Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We examined whether listening to bright or sad music would alleviate sadness when considering the tendency to ruminate over a period of time as a moderating variable. The participants’ tendency to ruminate were measured before the experiment. In the experiment, participants were randomly assigned to one of the bright or sad music conditions. How sad they felt was measured before and after watching a movie inducing sadness, after listening to one of the music or having a rest, and after working on numerical calculations as a distractor task. We compared how sad the participants felt under the four points among the three groups. The results indicated that there was no significant correlation between the tendency to ruminate and sadness, and sadness was alleviated sooner by listening to the bright music rather than the sad music.
