Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Using featural prototypes (novel faces synthesized with features taken from separate original faces) and configural prototypes (novel faces made by averaging original faces), we examined the prototype effect in face memory and the effect of presenting prototypes in initial testing on later recognition of original faces. Also, the negative suggestion effect was tested as to whether false familiarity to novel faces would be heightened when they were repeated from initial to later testing. Whereas the prototype effect was shown to be weak, the negative suggestion effect remained robust. These results were discussed in terms of the processing fluency heuristic.
