Abstract(in English) | Human activity recognition (HAR) has been attracting people for ubiquitous systems such as healthcare, elderly care, and so on. HAR usually uses smartphones and smartwatches. However, those devices require maintenance for battery charge or replacement. To overcome this problem, we design a Wi-Fi backscatter sensor for ultra-low-power HAR. Backscatter sensors are attached to parts of human bodies (e.g., arms and shoes) and wearable things such as bags and nametags. To change states of the generation of backscatter signals, we employ physical switching by human motions. Then, we extract human motions by observing the shifts in the state of the existence of the backscatter signal. To investigate the feasibility of HAR, we develop a pedometer by the backscatter sensor. From the evaluation results, we have confirmed that the backscatter signal is detectable in a $3.5m times 7m$ room, and the step count error is up to 2% with 5.2 $mu$W energy consumption. |
