Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This lecture discusses the placedness of language, based on the lecturer’s most recent series of studies on contemporary standard Japanese. While traditionally language has been considered to be displaced, it is not the case that the placedness of language has never been addressed before in linguistic research. However, such studies have chiefly considered origo (here, now, in reality, me) with regard to usage of a small number of deictic or indexical terms. Turning from vocabulary to grammar, the placedness of language can be observed in a wide range of forms, including animacy, transitivity, honorificity, and expressiveness. Furthermore, grammatical placedness includes aspects that are grounded not in origo but in the place under discussion (here, now, in reality, we). This will be introduced in this lecture through two phenomena that the lecturer refers to by the term “entitlement of speech.”
