Sparse STC estimation of suppressive elements for neurons in primary visual cortex

Abstract(in English) To improve a functional model for visual neurons, we have been developing a novel technique (sparse STC) where a spike-triggered covariance matrix is estimated via LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression by superposing a small number of basis functions prepared in the Fourier domain. To test this method for neurons in cat primary visual cortex, we analyzed single-unit responses to dynamic 2D noise stimuli. In addition to excitatory filters as the canonical functional models predict, several suppressive filters were discovered via sparse STC, but not via conventional STC, for some cells. These filters appeared to be responsible for cross-orientation suppression or surround suppression.
