Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | The purpose of this research is by use of font design of subtitle to visually convey emotions contained in tone of voice, which is one of the non-verbal information that cannot be presented only by textual information (such as situations where speech cannot be used). Four types of emotions, "anger", "fear", "joy", and "sadness" were taken up as references in previous research. First, a survey was conducted to select the fonts used in the experiment, and four types of fonts were determined. Next, four types of videos used in the experiment were determined. The experiment used a "Hello" as a subtitle. The experiment was carried out under 20 conditions, with four kinds of selected videos and four kinds of fonts decided by the survey and one control font as a subtitle. As a result, it became clear how much emotion each font can give on the videos. The fonts that considered "joy" had significantly higher "joy" results at the 1% CL in most videos. The fonts considered to represent "anger" gave the impression of "fear" in some of the videos, but in some videos the results of "anger" were significantly higher at the 1% CL. Fonts considered to represent "fear" had significantly higher "fear" results at the 1% CL for two emotions other than "sorrow". Fonts considered to represent "sadness" had a significantly higher "sadness" result at the 1% CL in most images. These results can be applied to subtitles of movies for the hearing impaired. |
