A Study on Diving Phase Classification toward Coaching Support for Competitive Swimming

Abstract(in English) The performance of diving in competitive swimming is a key factor to get a good time record.The problem on the diving form can be efficiently found if competitive swimmers and/or their coaches can recognize their diving form in detail.It is, however, difficult to recognize and understand the diving motion only by visual check, which causes the difficulty in coaching.Thus, this research aims to develop a system for efficient coaching support by quantitatively evaluate the diving motion in competitive swimming.This paper studies a machine learning-based method for diving phase classification toward realizing a coaching support system for competitive swimming.The method first takes a performance video of diving motion, and then classifies each video frame into three phases: Block, Flight, and Entry.Here, the method tries to improve the classification accuracy by increasing the training data using data augmentation as a pre-processing for machine learning.The method applies two kinds of image transformations original videos: rotation and cropping with scaling, in order to simulate the change of the camera settings.We evaluated the method through experiments, and confirmed that the data augmentation improved the classification accuracy.
