A Study on a Segment Prefetch Algorithm for DASH Streaming Video in Cache-enabled Networks

Abstract(in English) When clients watch Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) videos on top of a cache-enabled network, cache hits may contribute to not only reducing traffic in the network but also improving the average bitrate of DASH videos. Since links between caches and source servers providing DASH videos are not used by clients in the case of cache hits, the clients can download segments from the caches and prefetch high bitrate segments used in the near future simultaneously by using such unused links, thereby improving the average bitrate of DASH videos. Both estimating segments in caches and available bandwidth of links between caches and servers are keys to realizing this algorithm, referred to as a segment prefetch algorithm. In this paper, we conduct simulation experiments to investigate how wrong estimation of the two factors affects the performance of the segment prefetch algorithm and discuss design rationales for this algorithm.
