Joint Estimation of Illumination Distribution and Response Function from Shadows

Abstract(in English) We estimate the illumination distribution of a scene from a single image. Conventional methods assume that the radiometric response function of a camera is linear or that the scene is convex and has no cast shadow. However, since the response function of a consumer camera is nonlinear, the conventional methods cannot be applied to images on the Internet. Furthermore, the high-frequency components of the illumination distribution cannot be estimated from the image of a convex Lambertian scene without cast shadows. Therefore, we jointly estimate the illumination distribution and radiometric response function based on cast shadows. Specifically, we use Haar wavelets for representing an illumination distribution and perform sparse optimization. Furthermore, we show that by applying a mask to the edge region, robust estimation from approximate shapes in the real image is possible.
