Observations of break arc behaviors of AgSnO2 contacts in a DC inductive load under application of an external magnetic field

Abstract(in English) When AgSnO2 contacts were operated to break an inductive DC load circuit up to 20V-17A with an applied external magnetic field of about B=120mT at contact opening speeds in the range of 1mm/s to 200mm/s, in the cases where apparent magnetic blowing phenomena were not observed, break arcs were likely to extinguish after moving in the direction opposite to the Lorentz force direction. When a magnet was placed so that the resultant Lorentz force was to be applied in a horizontal direction, similar phenomena where break arcs extinguished after moving in the direction opposite to the resultant horizontal Lorentz force was observed with satisfactory repeatability. Thus, such phenomena were confirmed not to be caused by gravity. However, any physical mechanism which can explain the phenomena are still unknown.
