Measurement of the Interspace of Carbon Nanofiber Mats with Image Analysis

Abstract(in English) Carbon nanofiber mats are being developed for the purpose of removing environmental pollutants. The size of the interspaces among the fibers is assumed to relate to the property of oil adsorption. In this paper, we calculated the spacial frequency from the SEM images of the carbon nanofiber mat, and measured the size of the interspaces among the fibers from the power spectrum obtained by two dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT). These results confirmed quantitatively that the size of the interspaces became smaller after carbonization. In addition, we performed inverse Fourier transform to the image extracted the frequency component of the interspaces among fibers, and compared it with its original image. As the result, the interspaces in these images agreed with the large interspaces in the original images.
