Development of Autonomous Mobile Robot System for Outside Patrol

Abstract(in English) In recent years, the working population is expected to decline at an accelerating pace in Japan, because of the population decline and the super aging. In various fields such as industry, logistics, infrastructure, the shortage of workers has becoming a social problem. With this background, this research develops an autonomous mobile robot system to automate the outside patrol. We prototyped a crawler robot with GPS, LiDAR, IMU, for localization, and an omnidirectional camera for patrol. In the autonomous driving experiment on 120 m route containing left/right turn on a paved ground, the maximum error from the reference route was 0.16 m, with the target maximum error of 0.2 m. Also, on a route containing 0.1 m step up/down and unpaved ground (lawn), the maximum error was 0.22 m.
